What have been our successes this year?

The pupils, staff and parents of Shobnall Primary School are very proud of
their school. There is a strong drive to improve the teaching and learning standards and the attainment of our pupils have shown sustained improvement.

Following the appointment of a new Deputy Head and other new teaching staff we have developed shared leadership and management within the senior management team and have undertaken our workforce remodelling.

The School has undergone substantial upgrading and modernisation including a nursery, ICT suite, cloakrooms, new offices and disabled facilities. The School provides a stimulating environment complemented by excellent learning resources and ICT technology.

The Governing Body have continued to develop their accountability role within school and participate in its life and work. They have undertaken further training to improve their overall effectiveness. Parents also recognise the School's achievements and support it strongly. The parents' association thrives.

What are we trying to improve?

Our main priorities focus on raising achievement in literacy and numeracy by improving the effectiveness with which we meet the full range of learning needs. We are concentrating on the quality of provision by developing assessment for learning; identifying objectives and success criteria and sharing these with pupils. Governors have monitored this area closely, providing written feedback.

We are also enhancing subject leadership; curriculum co-ordinators have been appointed to further develop the whole school approach to the teaching and learning. They will continue to monitor and improve planning in these areas, attending specialist training and developing external links where appropriate.

All staff are now involved in ensuring consistency in moderation of marking to ensure an accurate reflection of each child's performance can be monitored throughout their time at the School. Teachers' plans have been reformulated in order to take account of differing learning styles of the children.

How have our results changed over time?

The substantial majority of pupils are making the nationally expected amount of progress and achieve their potential. Educational value added in 2005 was broadly comparable to all schools at KS2 and has improved over the past three years. The performance of the School compares well with other schools in the authority. For KS1 the percentage attainment for speaking/listening, reading, writing, maths and science is above the County average. There has been a rise in performance to 100% attainment in speaking and listening. The pupils attaining level 3 at the end of KS1 is also above the County and Family Group attainment.

At KS2 there was a slight rise in performance in English, pupils gaining Level 4 and above in English rose to 83%, in reading pupils attainment rose to 92% and 72% of Pupils achieved Level 4 in writing, which were above the County and Family Group. Pupils attainment at Level 4 for maths was 80% and science was 94%, both above the County Level.

How are we making sure we are meeting the learning needs of individual pupils?

The School aims to ensure that every child achieves their potential by:
>Making learning challenging, enjoyable, reflective
>Providing a broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated curriculum
>Providing constant opportunities for development of social, moral, spiritual and independent learning
>Celebrating and taking pride in all pupils' individual and common successes
>Celebrating and respecting every child's individual identity and promoting quality of opportunity for all

The implementation of a whole school curriulum planning scheme allows staff to address the individual developmental needs of each pupil across all areas of the curriculum.

All our staff are highly valued and motivated, and the School is recognised for providing access to training and development; we were awarded an 'Investors in People Award' in December 2004.

We have established links with John Taylor High School to provide maths coaching for gifted and talented pupils.

A full SEN audit was completed at the beginning of the academic year and provision made to ensure that all needs identified are being met fully. The School also enjoys high levels of Learning support within classrooms and for booster group sessions.

What have pupils told us about the school, and what have we done as a result?

Pupils are actively encouraged to express their views with confidence and readily talk to adults within School. Staff and school governor reviews with pupils, and feedback from pupil questionnaires show that they are happy, enjoy school and find their lessons interesting.

Through the School council elected representatives are given the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process. Each class also holds regular circle time sessions to allow pupils to express their views in an informal environment.

Initiatives which have been put in place as a result of pupil's comments include:
>Provision of picnic tables on the playground
>Further enhancement of the school uniform with the introduction of school ties
>Friendship stops
>Lunchtime and wet playtime play equipment provided

What do our pupils do after leaving this school?

Upon completion of Year 6 our pupils progress to one of the many high schools in the area. The majority move on to John Taylor High School, Barton under Needwood, or Paget High School, Burton, and we have developed strong links with these schools. Each year KS2 pupils get the opportunity to attend pre-entry visits to enable them to become more familiar with their new surroundings and to help inform their choices about progression to Year 7 education. We also send gifted and talented KS2 pupils for extra tution at John Taylor High School.

What have we done in response to Ofsted?

Our last Ofsted inspection took place in May 2002. In summary, the recommendations were as follow.

To implement a curriculum which;
>Takes account of children's individual learning styles
>Extends the more able
>Develops independent learning (including a review of the homework policy)
>Ensures that assessment for learning is at the heart of planning
>Ensures the process of target setting is used for all core subjects to improve attainment across KS1 and KS2
>Improves AT1 achievement in science

We believe that the senior management team and governors have addressed these issues in full and can demonstrate the improvements made within the daily life of the School.
